I did the background to this at the same time I did "Free Yourself". Instead of painting the sparrow w/acrylics, I tried my hand at pan pastels. It definitely gives it a softer look. What I loved was being able to make the sparrow a bit translucent so that it was more intergrated w/ the background. 
Lovely sparrow! He looks very determined to get to were he is going.

Lovely compositiion and color. Your sparrow turned out translucent and beautiful and seems to be soaring right out of the page with the stunning background you created...adore those patches of light, they give depth and movement.

Yes, having some of the background show through is really a great effect. I like this a lot, it makes me want to learn to paint birds.
